i'm so excited to start all these embroidery projects that i've been thinking about lately! the first one is something i found out about through my job. i work at a vintage shop and there was a sampler on the wall that a customer was asking about. he pointed out that it was actually a paperpoint sampler and not a regular fabric embroidery that i had assumed. i did some research and the internet actually sells perforated paper specifically for embroidery arts and craft stuff. i liked the idea of sewing into paper and the rigid grid structure of it and wanted to do something with it.
i'd been toying with the idea of doing some text pieces for a while and thought this might be the perfect opportunity.
first i had to figure out how to actually write using the grid. i googled some digital fonts and used that as a jumping off point. then i laid the perforated paper over a regular sheet and used a marker to practice where the stitches were going to go.
this is the first try. it's basically what i wanted, but the curved letters get a little weird and i didn't like that you can see the thread on the wrong side of the paper.
the solution, which ethan came up with, was to glue a piece of black fabric to the back of it with spray adhesive. bingo! that worked.
i worked a little more on the lettering and got that worked out. i wanted these to be more along the lines of the control panels that i had been working on before. I cut a hole in matt board, glued the embroidery piece from behind, and drew some knobs and buttons on there.
here's a close up and you can really see the stitching and the paper grid.
red alert!
shields compromised!
i've got a couple more to make and as soon as i figure out how much i should sell them for i'll be putting them up on etsy and my site.
