finished!

woo hoo!  the attack on the v838 energy collectors v2 is finally done!  adding the stars is always a cool part for me because on the one hand it adds depth to the image, and at the same time it can really flatten the image with an overall decorative look.

the grey embroidery that connects the energy storers felted up a little in the wash (they're 50% wool), but it turned out looking pretty cool.  it also shrunk a little bit too--ha! oops!

here's the original version that i made way back in 2008.  it was my 6th quilt and my first one that was science fiction based.  i'd say i've come a little ways!

i was anxious and excited to get this quilt done because i had a couple of deadlines to meet.  i'm applying for grad school and wanted to get this one included in my portfolio and i'm also applying for this year's nyfa grant.  finger's crossed!
here's a detail shot.  you can see all the glamour shots over at my website!  check it out: jimmymcbride.com!

  2. I'm wondering why you wash your quilts. I would never launder one of my finished wall quilts.

  3. i wash the quilts for a couple of reasons. i draw a lot of lines on the quilts with white fabric pencil (on black fabric) and washing is the only way to get those out. fabric erasers don't work all that well and with the size of the quilts that would take forever. i also like the way the quilts slightly pucker around the hand stitching once the quilts have been dried in the dryer. it's also been kind of ingrained in me by my mom; you don't wear new clothes until they've been washed, you don't make clothes until the fabric has been washed etc, for some reason i just don't think it's done until it comes out of the dryer.
